I was setting up OpenVPN on my VPS today. I was following this tutorial and everything went smoothly until I’ve installed client on my Windows 7 desktop. I got connected, but my Internet traffic wasn’t forwarded through VPN and this was my main goal. So I’ve checked server config and applied few ideas found via Google, no luck. Modified iptables, still no forwarding. Then I’ve checked logs in my client, now I know that I should’ve started there. It turned out that because I was running client in standard user mode it wasn’t able to create proper routes in system as only admin can do it. The solution to this is to either run OpenVPN client as administrator, I don’t like it, or to add routes manually. I’ve chosen second option copying all route related lines from the log and adding them to bat file, then I’ve just run bat as administrator. Works like a charm!

I’m using Windows 7 on my desktop for some time now, I’ve upgraded from Vista. Yesterday I’ve shutdown the system normally, without any problems. Today after start and logging into I’ve noticed that wallpaper is changed and then message appeared that I was logged into a temporary profile and have no access to my files. WTF?! I’ve logged off and started my Mac to catch up with few things meanwhile. Log off process was on for about 15 minutes, so I’ve finally gave up and turned off machine then turned it on again. Selected to start Windows normally in after crash dialog and voila my profile has been launched without problem, I have all my files and settings. Windows is strangest system, really. Next time somebody would ask me why I prefer Mac OS I’ll point him to this post. Just hope that it was single instance of this issue, will make a new backup though, just in case.

Microsoft announced that his new baby (Windows 7) would be available for public on October 22nd this year. It’s pretty soon. Hopefully there would be not so many issues like with Vista (which was also released pretty quick). As person who was involved in Windows 7 localization process I must say that indeed there was a rush, sometimes too much. But as I saw latest build (newer than RC), system looks fine. To be honest I’m happy that it would be released so fast, because I see a potential in this OS. It has many functions which are suitable for me, but I’m not used to use not finished OS as my working system, that’s why I can’t enjoy it fully now. We will see. And hopefully it would be affordable, but according to rumors on the net my hope is hopeless:P
