Is your employer snooping on you?

As some wise guy called Ziembor said “most of nowadays blogs are just re-blogging other blogs or news sites”. I hope mine is not like that, but truly last time there are many interesting stories which I want to comment. Is it bad, decide.

Again slashdot.com has published interesting article. This time about how future employers are snooping network searching for info about candidate. I would not re-blog it here, as I’ve promised. I just started to wonder, if my current employer is doing it now. And does it really matter what I’m publishing on network. If it’s not work related then it shouldn’t be in my company’s interest, but who knows. Should I start to be scared about using the Web? Would I ruin my career by posting nonsense on this blog? Hopefully not, but I’ve started to think about it. Deeply. And maybe should you.

Wired "war" against netbooks continues

Another day and another article against netbooks on wired.com. This time it’s much better than last time, but still. I believe expectations of the author are too big. You’ll never have fool comfort with such small device, and I would definitively not even think of writing a book on netbook. However I believe it’s quite cool to serf the net with it, if your websites have more pictures than text. Other accusation is that keyboard is cramped. Well, what do you expect from something so small, again. People, change your attitude. If something is meant to be only a little more than a Pocket PC (at least it’s mine point of view) then don’t expect it to be something else.

Netbooks May Offer Hackers Private Data Gateway

This is the title of an article from wired.com, which happens to be my favorite magazine. But this particular article is trash for me. Mainly it’s about how netbooks (like Asus EEE PC) are vulnerable for network attacks, because they’re have no security built-in. Author says that most of such computers have no antivirus installed (but how many notebooks or PCs have?) or users are simply turning them off (antivirus apps), because netbooks have too low performance to handle normal apps and antivirus at the same time (what a bullshit). Of course there is Symantec mentioned (commercial?), and I can agree that most of netbooks would not handle Symantec heavy security package. But even my Core 2 Duo regular laptop with 2GB of RAM had problems with Symantec. And it looks like Symantec knew well about the problem, because they’ve returned me money spent on Norton 360 without even asking why. But please, there are better security apps than Symantec and they don’t need such powerful hardware. Second thing if somebody is so stupid to turn off his firewall and antivirus, well, he deserves what he would get.

Microsoft Vision of the Future

This is what MS has presented as their vision of 2019. I must say that it’s impressive. I like the idea of everything being wireless. Well, let’s wait and see. What I know now it’s that I definitively want such cool tablet.

Why to work in IT

This funny image was attached to article on Polish portal. Article was about the thing that most of people from IT work less than 6 hours a day. This data was taken from a survey runned by sladhdot.com. Well, I can only say that it’s a pity that it doesn’t work that way in localization industry (which I’m in). Some people have more luck I guess.

Hyper-V on Dell Optiplex

As I’ve had problems with setting this up I thought that it would be nice to share a resolution. So, to enable Hyper-V support on Dell Optitplex go to BIOS and set everything as described below:

  • Security > Execute Disable (set to On)
  • Performance > Virtualization (set to On)
  • Performance > VT for Direct I/O Access (set to On)
  • Performance > Trusted Execution (set to Off)

Save your changes. Turn the computer off and unplug the power cord for few seconds. I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes just to power off simply doesn’t work.

Hard weekend

It was hard weekend with Windows 7. I was working entire Saturday to bring you localized version of the new system on time. You should be thankful! Yes, I’m talking to you! Dutch people:)

Mail address change

Just a quick note. My email address @mygmail.org is not working, and I believe that will never work again. So if wanna contact me use my @gmail.com address. Of course I’m not publishing it here, but who should contact me knows how to contact me:)

2009!

It is a shame that we have a brand new year and I haven’t posted anything. So just to let the world know that I’m still alive and this blog will continue, I’m writing… Hmmm…

Cheers!

PS. I just want to add that I was in Vienna for New Year’s Eve! And I would share my impressions asap:) So stay tuned!

Transporter 3

I’ve watched this movie on the weekend. I’m not gonna write about this movie in general, but it’s quite stupid. I want to write about the image of Hungary (especially Budapest) presented in this title. Except car of main character there is no single one which is younger than 20 years. Nice, another typical image of Eastern Europe. They’ll never learn. I was in Budapest this year and may say that there is more luxurious cars than in Boston for instance.
